Hardback shade construction 

There are two main types of shade construction that enable them to come in a variety of shapes and sizes. There's either a hard-back lining or a metal framework with cloth draped over it. A `hard-backed` shade is typically lined with plastic or other hard materials that designed to prevent unlimited light from passing through the sides of the shade. The hard lining allows the shape of the shade to be firm and less likely to change over time. The firm backing is not visible from the outside of the shade, as there's typically some sort of cloth or decorative paper enhancement on the outside.
