Drum Shade

A mid-century mainstay, drum shades are iconic throw backs to the 1960s, but they are just as relevant as ever. Both transitional and contemporary look books are chocked full of drum shades. Their lack of complexity is both simple and stunning. Drum shades can be made to work on any round lamp base. In almost all cases, this type of shade is wider than it is tall.

Cylinder Shape

A taller version of drum shades, cylinder shades are tall columns of light perfect for making a statement. Shades like this typically work well with a tall slender lamp base - both table lamps and floor lamps. Cylinder lamp shades are taller than they are wide, typically by a big enough margin to demonstrate a distinctly tall shade shape. There are two main types of shade construction that enable them to come in a variety of shapes and sizes. There’s either a hard-back lining or a metal framework with cloth draped over it.

A `hard-backed` shade is typically lined with plastic or other hard materials that designed to prevent unlimited light from passing through the sides of the shade. The hard lining allows the shape of the shade to be firm and less likely to change over time. The firm backing is not visible from the outside of the shade, as there’s typically some sort of cloth or decorative paper enhancement on the outside.
